"the successful failure"

Not many know that OMEGA was directly involved in returning the Apollo 13 crew to safety. After an explosion on the command module crippled the mission, the astronauts relied on a Speedmaster to time a series of engine burns which corrected their course back to Earth.

This procedure had to be done manually so the slightest imprecision could cause them to either burn up while entering the Earth's atmosphere or bouncing off into space. For the 45th anniversary of this mission, OMEGA released a special edition Speedmaster to commemorate the event.

THIS MISSION IS REGARDED AS ONE OF NASA'S GREATEST SUCCESS STORIES, AND ONE OF OMEGA'S PROUDEST MOMENTS.

Using archive footage from NASA, some CGI and a bit of ingenuity, we put together a short promo film recounting Apollo 13's extraordinary events. We gave the piece a retro-technical style which modernises the 70's footage yet doesn't distract from the emotion of the event. A few of the key shots were generated from scratch and we added a layer of (factually correct) info-graphics so that the piece is interesting to watch more than once.

The film was played at an event launching the new Speedmaster and hosted by George Clooney (an avid space fan since a boy). It will also
be used further online around the campaign.

THE PROJECT HAD A QUICK TURN-AROUND TIME of only 2 WEEKS FROM BRIEF TO DELIVERY.
